What others are saying about Christine:

Christine is an incredibly knowledgeable esthetician. During our initial consult she spent a great deal of time evaluating my current skin care regime and educating me on how to achieve my skin care goals. We discussed in depth, key ingredients to consider and avoid, proper ph balance, sun care, and the proper order to apply skin care products. During my facial Christine created a relaxing environment with music, aromatherapy, and cozy blankets. The experience was the perfect balance of relaxation and education when she briefly explained various steps during my facial. Moreover, she performed a fascia release massage which I found quite fascinating. The end result was incredible, my eyes were closed for much of the time, but I’m pretty sure Christine had a magic wand back there! Before leaving Christine reiterated what we discussed during our consult, and had suggestions for products to use at home. Furthermore, I appreciated that she stocked products with natural derivatives and cold-pressed oils. As promised my skin looked even more incredible the following day. I’m throughly impressed with the results Christine was able to achieve, her level of care, and passion for her field. It’s definitely no surprise she is a Skin Games champ. I’m so glad to finally find a regular esthetician and would highly recommend her services.  Tahwii Spicer reviewed Christine Byer Esthetics5 star

“I had my first facial with Christine and it was AWESOME! 3 days later my skin is even better than when I left. She took the time to learn about my skin concerns and tailor a facial to meet my needs. I love that she doesn’t work in a corporate-owned salon where they are forced to try and push product on clients. It’s also great to support an independent woman-owned business. I’ll be back!” Brenda Johnson, June 2015 via Facebook

“Christine created a sweet and professional atmosphere to welcome her clients, uses 100% natural products. My skin improved 100% within 3 days after my first visit, my skin looks healthy and cleaned, wrinkles disappeared, and even tiny stains I had are gone!” Posted by lily_apple

“Hey I’m a 76 year old male and been going to Christine for almost a year, my friends and clients are surprised that I don’t look my age and that I have so few wrinkles on forehead and my mouth muscles are not drooping…and eyes are not baggy.”  Carl A. Long, January 13, 2015

“I had my first treatment with Christine this past week. It was the best facial I ‘ve ever had! My skin looked wonderful afterward. I definitely plan to continue treatments with Christine. She is very knowledgeable and tailors her treatments to each person’s individual skin care needs.”  Posted by Rhonda Peet, client since February, 2014

Microcurrent treatment with gloves

Along with traditional facials, my specialty is microcurrent facial toning combined with Facial Contouring Massage.  Microcurrent is a subsensory current (you don’t feel it) that lifts and tightens your face by restoring muscle tone and volume. See my People’s Choice Award in the Skin Games!

It’s been a wild ride this Spring kicking off with the Skin Games in California. The Skin Games is the first-ever national competition of estheticians. Out of 1029 esthetician players, the top 30 finalists (yes I was a finalist!) traveled to California for the Live Show and judging process. I sat in front of a panel of skincare industry executives who were judging the finalists (not to mention a camera crew and the entire staff of the Skin Games. No intimidation there!) But it was a fun experience, and I learned a ton in the process.

To enter the Skin Games, I did an 8 week case study with a model, with before and after photos and a video blog every week.  Out of more than 1000 entries, I was chosen a finalist due to the results I accomplished  (See here if you didn’t see them.)

Now you can say your esthetician is a Skin Games Finalist and won the top 3 People’s Choice Award. Thanks for voting for me!  See some photos below.

P.S. Rumor has it (but it’s very hush, hush!) that the Live Show will be televised. Not sure when or what channel. Trust me, I will let you know!

Here’s a recap

I’m a finalist in the Skin Games!

imageWoohoo!  Out of 1,029 applicants nationwide, I’m a top 30 finalist in the 2016 Skin Games  (and top 6 in the age management category!)  I’ll be competing with the 30 top estheticians in the country, according to the Games.   I was also voted People’s Choice Top 10, see photo to the left.  Check out the live show April 23rd, 2016. I’ll be there representing lil’ old Indianapolis! That’s right!  I’ll be traveling to California in April to attend the live show taping.  I have to sit in front a panel of judges before the show.  That part is a teeny bit intimidating.  What will they ask me?  Hopefully about all my skincare secrets I used on my model. (To enter, I had to submit photos and videos of 8 weeks of antiaging treatments on a model.)  That’s easy.  I’ve been sharing skincare secrets for the last 9 years on my YouTube channel.  Check them out here:

So keep your fingers crossed!  I’ll keep you updated on the results.  If anything, I’m just looking forward to meeting other top estheticians from across the country.  Should be fun!  Stay tuned for posts from the show in April.

Image Skincare’s Worldwide Product Launch 2016

IMG_9200Last night I braved through darkness, rain and massive road construction to attend a beloved event. What would make me do this? To get a glimpse of Image skincare’s newest products. If you don’t know about Image, the are known for their ingenuity, innovation and clever product formulations.   They have many multitasking creams that smooth wrinkles and brighten skin so you look like a movie star! (your skin will anyway)

They came out with a few notable new products. The first that I loved was their Vital C Hydrating Facial Oil. It felt so smooth and nourishing when I applied it.  I feel a skincare hit brewing with this antioxidant power packed oil.

My next biggest CRUSH was their The MIMG_9202ax Stem Cell Neck Lift.  100% of volunteers saw an improvement in their neck after application.  I’ll let you know my verdict after I’ve put it to the test.  You all know how I’m constantly looking for a “holy grail” neck cream!

There’s more to come on the new products (8 in all!)  The best part was getting to see old coworkers from the Woodhouse in Carmel.  Image skincare wwpl2016Fun was had by all with champagne and confections, and even an award for the best dressed attendee!  Sadly, I didn’t get a photo of her.  But check out fellow esthetician Anna Phillips and me being photo bombed by the Image poster!  LOL #imagewwpl2016.  Age later!

Can facial massage really be antiaging? If it’s the RIGHT kind of massage

cropped-image21.jpgThe Facial Contouring Massage. That’s the name of the class I assisted Jane Mann LE teach in Vegas two weeks ago.  The class taught the face has too layers of fascia (a tough but delicate layer that holds the body together.)  In the face, the most superficial layer controls minute facial contractions or movements.  The deeper layer connects the skin to muscle and fat and forms the “girdle” of facial muscles called the SMAS by surgeons. If this fascia

3D model of facial fascia and muscles

3D model of facial fascia and muscles

is restricted, it will hold deeper facial wrinkles “in place” until released. Also, fascia constricts in many different directions and can be restricted by repetitive facial movements, surgery, scars, injections, implants, fillers and other facial procedures thereby blocking optimum lymph flow (waste removal/detoxification) and blood circulation in the skin. Also, just like in the body we gets knots from overworked muscles (think about your shoulders and neck from looking down at the computer, phone or tablet, for example) the same occurs in the face.

After a series of Jade Microcurrent Facial Contouring Massage

So the question is, can facial massage be antiaging for the face?  Absolutely yes!  The CORRECT facial massage, one that releases fascia AND deep tension in the face will increase blood flow and lymphatic drainage from the face.  This results in a very relaxed, smooth, plump looking face after the Facial Contour Massage with Microcurrent.  But a normal massage won’t do the same thing. Why?  Because it takes a certain touch to release fascia. It is very gentle. The practitioner needs to really understand the anatomy of the face and to be able to feel the release.  If you go too deep too soon, less lasting benefits happen. When you release the fascia first then go deeper,  antiaging magic happens and the results stay longer.  (Think of the last deep tissue massage you had.  It was great but you needed another one two days later, right?  Why?  They didn’t release the fascia and the tight fascia moved the muscles right back into (the tight) place.  The fascia controls the muscle and NOT the other way around.)

Add microcurrent facial toning and it is one of the best, most nurturing antiaging treatments you can get for yourself.  Read more here:

NEW! Microcurrent Facial Contouring Massage

In Chicago, looking all stiff. Probably because I was still working at the Woodhouse!

Dallas show, how I've missed you!

Dallas show, how I’ve missed you!

It’s been a whirlwind spring with lots of education, travel and new experiences.  In March, I went  to Chicago for the Face & Body Midwest Skincare Show.  Then a month later I flew to Dallas for an advanced microcurrent class (let’s say SUPER ADVANCED) and ended up landing a free ticket to the International Congress of Esthetics!  It was so fun going back West and seeing my esty friends from Austin and around Texas.  The Dallas show was fantastic (sorry Face & Body, you gotta catch up!)  I test drove a whole body vibration machine there and was blown away.  I ended up buying a machine for my office.  You’ll have to come

On the whole body vibration machine. Woo hoo! Feels like a massage and an amusement park ride. It makes you laugh!

and check it out.  Helps with circulation, lymph drainage and best of all, recontouring the body as it vibrates all the fat out of your muscles.  Who doesn’t need that?

But the star of the show was the class I attended on advanced microcurrent.  We were taught many new concepts that blew the old way of doing microcurrent out of the water!  Now I look at the face in a

completely different way when doing microcurrent.  Jane Mann, Esthetician extraordinaire and microcurrent master (known in Las Vegas as Vegas’ best kept secret) taught us all her famous Facial Contouring Massage.  It can be done with or without current, so it’s safe for

pregnant mommas to be and those with pacemakers or other contraindications to microcurrent.

Best of all for you, the client, it feels like this luxurious, hydrating, nurturing massage that just happens to leave you lifted and toned like no other antiaging treatment can.  So if you haven’t tried microcurrent yet, come see what Oprah, JLo, Jennifer Anniston,

From the class workbook, Facial Contouring Massage. Looks good, huh?

Vanessa Williams, Meryl Streep and many others do to keep looking impossibly lifted even in their later years.  It’s gentle, safe and sooooo relaxing.

As an incentive to try the new Facial Contouring Massage with Microcurrent, receive a free peel of your choice (I have many different gentle, lovely fruit enzyme based peels as well as the peel your face off peels!) with any Microcurrent treatment  purchased before my price increase in June.  Expires 5/31/2015.  Please write in notes of appointment “free peel”.  Thanks!

If I only had an hour to make your face look amazing…

cropped-image21.jpgToday I had an hour to make a difference in someone’s skin. What did I do?

A coconut enzyme peel, followed by pulsed vacuum facial cupping, red LED light and Microcurrent facial toning.  The result?

Here’s what the client said:

The reason it made such a difference is that this treatment effected the face on a few different levels. To work on rough skin texture without over drying it I chose the coconut papaya enzyme peel. It’s gentle, effective and slow acting. I can do the facial cupping at the same time. The facial cupping virtually “sucks” and drains all the lymph and extra cellular fluids (read: puffiness, double chins, bagginess and jowly-ness, etc.) from the face. This renders the face and neck looking slim, taught and svelte. The red LED light increases the skin’s cellular activity to provide lasting results of the facial (increases cellular turnover 5-7 fold). The Microcurrent lifts and tones facial muscles to lift cheeks, eyes, necks and foreheads. The result is a work-of-art facial that lasts a few weeks. Better still, when done in a series of 6-12 twice weekly treatments (depending on age and amount of wrinkling or drooping) the results are cumulative and last longer between treatments. Facial muscle memory returns to a more youthful state. Facial lymph drainage returns to it’s quick, youthful rate and drainage pattern.  The skin thickens and its tone evens.  End result: a beautiful, even-toned, lifted, sculpted face that is always photoready and never artificial looking.  Selfie, anyone?

Why I hate Cetaphil!

Cetaph ill: the bane of my existence!

Cetaph ill: the bane of my existence!

Americans love this cleanser yet it does nothing good for their skin.  Dermatologists constantly prescribe it to their clients.  What gives?  Finally, words that describe why I HATE IT!!!

I found this article about Cetaphil:

Why the popular cleanser isn’t doing your skin any favors

Cetaphil probably has the best PR of any facial soap. Beauty magazines gush over it as a no-frills $8 must-have. Dermatologists love to recommend it as a mild and non-irritating facial cleanser for two reasons: it doesn’t contain fragranceand, more tellingly, because MDs have a big Pharma love affair with the manufacturer, Galderma, the offspring of Nestlé and L’Oréal, which also makes acne drugs like Differin.

And yet there’s nothing healthy about this face-washing prescription.

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser contains just eight ingredients: water, cetyl alcohol, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfate, stearyl alcohol, methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben.
All but the water are chemically manufactured (let’s hope), and propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfate, and the three parabens have a seat on the dirty dozen, a list of cosmetic ingredients to avoid as potentially toxic.

One look at the label and you’ve got to go “Wait a minute! What?”says Spirit Demerson, who analyzes skin-care ingredients for Spirit Beauty Lounge, her online natural beauty store. “Cetaphil does not contain even one single beneficial ingredient and what it does contain is the equivalent of toxic sludge. Whether you think it’s keeping your skin healthy or not, it is absorbed into your bloodstream and research has proven almost all of the few ingredients in it are carcinogenic. I know it’s hard to imagine that washing your face can give you cancer but it’s worth consideration.”

The ingredients in this popular Gentle Skin Cleanser don’t support the name
Julia March, a top NYC facialist, says that so many New Yorkers believe that Cetaphil is healthy, they tend ignore the ingredients completely. “Cetyl alcohol, an emollient used in many cosmetics, is essentially a wax,” says March. “Propylene glycol is a common humectant (meaning it brings moisture from the air to the skin), but it also enhances product and chemical penetration into the skin and blood stream. Sodium lauryl sulfate is a foaming agent, and skin and eye irritant, that disturbs the healthy lipid barrier of the skin, and parabens are a group of preservatives being phased out for potential health risks.”

Given that there’s actually nothing clean about this cleanser, it’s rather amazing that millions of women think their skin will freak out if they use anything else. “It may not irritate skin very much, but it probably won’t help it much either,” says Nicole Yih, Assistant Spa Director at the Mandarin Oriental New York. That’s because there’s nothing in Cetaphil that nurtures skin. No antioxidants that help fight free radical damage; not a dribble of omega-rich plant seed oils that fortify the skin barrier; and not a drop of skin-calming botanicals.
A cleanser that you use twice a day should be judged on what it gives your skin. Consider this your new cleanser criterion. —Melisse Gelula

Are you ‘Inflammaging’ your skin?

imageDid you know?

High powered lasers, deep peels, IPL and Retin A and other aggressive skin treatments can cause skin inflammaging. This means they can actually AGE the skin MORE in the long run than noninvasive treatments.

The term ‘inflammaging’ is changing the face of skincare. ‘Inflammaging’ describes skin aging induced by chronic (persistent) inflammation. An example of inflammaging is using products such as Retin A and Retinoids daily that cause long term inflammation on the skin. After years of use, some Retin A users start to see diminishing results and lacklusimageter looking skin.

Other harsh, invasive treatments such as high powered lasers at the dermatologist’s office (IPL, Yag, Erbium, etc.) can also cause a hardening or scarring of the skin. This is so prevalent that many plastic surgeons refuse to work on clients who have had previous repeated laser treatments. The surgeons know that a facelift would not “lay properly” because the skin is hardened or scarred due to inflammaging from the repeated laser work.

In my practice, I use gentle, no-downtime treatments that I know the skin loves. I gently coax the skin into a healthier state through non ablative (non-cutting or damaging) microcurrent, LED light and other progressive rather than aggressive treatments. The professional products I use are full of antinflammatory and antioxidant ingredients your skin loves. After a treatment, you can be sure your skin will look better than it did when you walked in. That’s my promise!

If you want to avoid inflammaging your skin but still want supple, lifted and hydrated skin, contact me for relaxing yet effective treatments. Call or text now to book an appointment (317) 891-5424 or book online.
